Dwarf Chinquapin Oak

An absolute winner for wildlife and one of the most precocious Oaks we know of, this shrubby tree often produces acorns in the 2nd or 3rd year after planting. This species is rather unique in the Quercus genus in that it often produces thickets from clonal-reproduction via roots. As the name suggests, this is a small tree, often maxing out at 12-15 ft. While widely adapted, it does best in acidic well-drained soils and is draught-tolerant once established. Acorns are relished by deer and turkey, dropping in October usually. As a bonus, the fall color is gorgeous.
